Workplace drug abuse is becoming a growing problem in the Australian workplace. It adversely impacts on almost all industries in Australia, incurring substantial costs in both human and economic terms.
It is estimated that each year: drug-related workplace accidents in Australia cost around $1.3 billion - half of which is borne by employers; around two per cent of Australians go to work affected by illicit drugs; 30 per cent of Australia's long-distance heavy vehicle drivers rated ‘stay-awake drugs' as the most effective strategy to combat fatigue; and one in four workers tested for drugs following workplace accidents test positive.
