Accreditation: Building Safer Food Systems Everywhere

The theme for World Food Safety Day 2026, “From burden to solutions — safe food everywhere,” highlights a global shift toward practical, collaborative action.

As food systems become more interconnected and increasingly reliant on complex global supply chains, ensuring safety and security has never been more critical.

Encouragingly, national and international initiatives are advancing these goals through coordinated effort, shared expertise and aligned standards.

NATA plays an active role in this landscape through participation in key forums, including Standards Australia committees for Food Microbiology (FT 035) and Food Chemistry (FT 024), the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CCMAS), the APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum, and AOAC International bringing the perspective of the conformity assessment community into global discussions.

Efforts continue to combat food fraud, support the safe development and verification of alternative protein sources, harmonise allergen testing within the Codex framework, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration to validate microbiological methods through ISO TC 34 SC9.

A common theme across the food space is the growing impact of digitisation. AI-driven border inspections are reducing reliance on manual, paper-based processes, enabling faster, more consistent import decisions. Digital platforms are enhancing traceability across supply chains, supporting real-time data sharing, and enabling earlier detection of risks and anomalies. These technologies not only improve efficiency but also strengthen trust by increasing transparency and auditability across the food system.

Ultimately, solutions are driven by collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. By combining global cooperation with digital innovation, the food safety community is better equipped to move from burden to solutions bringing the world closer to safe, trusted food everywhere.
