ChemCentre, one of the longest continually NATA accredited laboratories in Australia, recently opened its doors to give the local Western Australian community a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes and celebrate chemistry and science.
ChemCentre has an international reputation in the field of forensic science and analytical chemistry and this month marked 72 years of NATA accreditation.
ChemCentre provides a range of diverse services including HAZMAT emergency response to support the State’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), and forensic chemistry and toxicology services to WA Police and the State Coroner to support the administration of justice.
It also supports the promotion of chemistry-related education in WA via supervision of postgraduate students and a comprehensive education and outreach programs which includes school visits, laboratory tours and citizen science projects.
On November 22, ‘Open Day 2022’ attracted several thousand visitors who got to meet scientists and partner organisations including WA Police, DFES, Australian Border Force, universities, research organisations and industry.
Through laboratory tours, displays, ‘hands on’ activities, presentations and a science show, visitors were able to learn more about the role science and chemistry play in safeguarding and supporting the West Australian community, industry and the environment.
