Everyday Heroes: The Volunteer Experts Behind NATA Accreditation
NATA team

Every NATA accreditation rests on one critical foundation: peer expertise. Behind every assessment, accreditation decision and confidence‑based outcome is a nationwide network of more than 2,500 volunteer Technical Assessors bringing real‑world knowledge directly into the accreditation process.

Their impact is practical and immediate. Often unseen, these experts work across multiple industries, laboratories and facilities applying their current and highly relevant industry experience.

This is what ensures Australia’s accreditation system remains robust, consistent and fit for purpose.

At its core, NATA accreditation is a peer review process. Technical Assessors are professionals who understand the risks, constraints and realities of regulated environments. They evaluate technical practice with rigour, context and professional judgement helping organisations demonstrate competence, improve performance and strengthen confidence in their results.

Technical Assessors are selected through a rigorous appointment process based on their industry expertise, understanding of management systems and ability to apply objective, evidence‑based analysis. Many are leaders within NATA‑accredited organisations themselves, contributing back into the very system that supports their sectors.

Once appointed, Technical Assessors undertake NATA‑delivered training before joining on‑site assessment teams led by a NATA Lead Assessor. Their role is hands‑on and highly practical observing technical activities, engaging directly with staff, testing the application of standards and contributing informed findings that support clear, actionable outcomes.

Their contribution doesn’t end when the assessment concludes. Technical Assessors also play a key role in post‑assessment activities, reviewing responses to findings and providing ongoing technical insight. This continuity strengthens consistency across assessments and drives improvement across the accreditation system as a whole.

Since 1 May 2025, 1,171 Technical Assessors have taken part in 2,214 assessments, directly supporting quality, safety and performance across accredited services Australians rely on every day—from healthcare and environmental monitoring to engineering, food testing and beyond.

This collective effort is why NATA recognises Technical Assessors as its “Everyday Heroes.” Their volunteer expertise underpins systems that inform critical decisions, protect public confidence and support trust in regulated outcomes often without recognition.

Technical Assessors are part of a broader volunteer ecosystem that strengthens accreditation. NATA’s Accreditation Advisory Committees (AAC) provide specialist advice to ensure accreditation requirements remain aligned with industry practice and emerging needs. The Member Advisory Forum (MAF) brings the voice of accredited organisations into the conversation, helping NATA continue to evolve in line with sector expectations.

Together, these volunteers ensure accreditation is more than a process—it is a living system built on professional judgement, collaboration and continuous improvement.

As part of National Volunteer Week, NATA thanks all Technical Assessors, the organisations that support their participation, and members of the AACs and MAF for their commitment and expertise. Their contribution strengthens the integrity of accreditation and the confidence placed in it—across Australia and beyond.
