As we know, many appliances now come with an Energy Rating Label showing their energy consumption and performance as a “star rating”. This helps consumers compare products and make informed purchases, while also increasing the energy efficiency of products used in Australia.

These star ratings are informed by results from accredited laboratories who test against the Australian Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) requirements.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) plans to introduce requirements for a new type of appliance: heat pump water heaters.

Have your say

DCCEEW is encouraging laboratories and other stakeholders to review the draft proposal and provide comments by 5 October 2026 through their consultation hub.
