NWI Calibration (NWI) provides calibration and metrology services across a wide scope, including mass and weighing, volume and POVA, rotational speed, electrical and time, pressure, temperature and humidity.
As part of these services, NWI operates a network of laboratories in all major Australian cities including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Each of the laboratories maintains ISO/IEC 1705 accreditation with NATA.
NWI was first accredited by NATA in August 1985 and has achieved a milestone of 40 years of continuous accreditation.
Quality from day one
In 1985, a service technician working with Townson & Mercer Pty Ltd decided to found his own calibration service business and gain NATA accreditation, which would go on to become what is known today as NWI.
As an industry expert, he recognised the importance of accreditation in building a trusted reputation for technical excellence, quality assurance, and customer service, so he wanted the same for his new venture. In 1990, the business was acquired by another industry expert and renamed to OKS Instruments. The new owner had frequently worked with the founder on balance repairs in the past, so he also understood the value and importance of quality, so the company maintained its existing NATA accreditation.
In 1996, OKS Instruments merged with Industrial Scale Supply and Service (ISSS) to form National Weighing & Instruments, which then was shortened to NWI Calibration. This merger brought together a wealth of industry knowledge and technical expertise, and importantly, expanded the scope of NATA accreditation to include mass calibration and industrial scales, which enabled the combined organisation to support a broader client base and scale nationally.
Confidence in quality
Since that time, NWI has continued to expand its scope of accreditation in line with customer demand, regulatory needs, and commercial viability. Today, its NATA-accredited services cover a comprehensive range of metrology disciplines including mass, weighing, volume, pressure, electrical, temperature, humidity, and more.
By achieving and maintaining accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025, NWI can demonstrate to customers that its laboratories meet the highest technical standard for measurement and calibration. It is also able to provide them with confidence that its services are both competent and realiable.
For its teams, the accreditation process has created a culture of accountability and ongoing development. The regular NATA assessments it undergoes have become a valuable source of feedback, helping it to remain at the forefront of its industry by improving its processes and taking on new technologies.
For the broader industry, NWI’s accredited services support a competitive market directly impacting safety and regulatory compliance particularly in the manufacturing, health, energy, and trade sectors.
A journey for anyone
Accreditation may have been a cornerstone of NWI’s identity from day one, but the journey towards quality and success can start at any point.
When reflecting on its four decades with NATA, NWI’s advice to other organisations considering accreditation is to view the process as an opportunity for growth and continuous improvement rather than just a compliance requirement. .
For best results, NWI recommends approaching the process with an open mind and a willingness to learn, as well as taking on external input from assessors as a constructive source of feedback. There is also value in engaging your team early and helping them understand how accreditation benefits both the business and their professional development, as well as viewing accreditation not as a one-time goal, but as a continuous improvement.
From strengthened customer trust to improved internal processes, NWI has seen accreditation bring measurable benefits to its business. For that reason, it expects that any organisation that values and seeks quality, reliability, and reputation will benefit from pursuing it.
A recognised framework
Accreditation has become a fundamental part of NWI’s operational model, helping it deliver dependable outcomes and meet client expectations. NATA accreditation provides a structured and internationally recognised framework for proving technical competence, which confirms that its laboratories operate to the highest standards.
What began as a single-parameter accreditation in 1985 has grown into a nationally recognised, multi-laboratory operation, reflecting NWI’s long-standing commitment to quality and continuous improvement across all areas of its business. Accreditation has not only helped elevate NWI over the years to become a trusted partner to its clients, but also become a standard-bearer for quality across Australia’s measurement landscape.
