60 Years of NATA Accreditation: Cementing a Legacy in Construction Materials
NATA team

The Boral Technical Services Laboratory (Boral) at Orange Grove, WA is a NATA-accredited facility specialising in Construction Materials Testing. This year, it celebrates 60 years of continuous accreditation by NATA.

Boral’s accredited services include a range of Concrete, Aggregate and Soils Testing. Its scope has expanded over the years to support testing such as concrete compressive and flexural strength testing, shrinkage, density, and consistency.

Aggregate Testing includes water absorption, particle size distribution, and a range of other durability tests. Boral’s Soils section capitalises on test methods associated with Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) works or equivalent supporting WA’s infrastructure. Its Annex Facilities also provide further on-site support variable to the scope of works.

Uplifting Construction

The original decision to pursue NATA accreditation was driven by the need to provide independently verified and technically reliable test data for the construction industry. It was also to align its laboratory practices with national benchmarks. This step reflected Boral’s broader commitment to excellence, accountability, and industry trust.

By successfully gaining and holding onto the accreditation, Boral has seen it underpin confidence in its results. It does so by ensuring that every test is conducted with impartiality, traceability, and technical competence.

Accreditation has also helped to ensure the materials and services Boral supplies in construction meet the highest performance and durability standards. This enables the company to support its customers with compliance with MRWA, AS, and other Project specifications.

For Boral’s clients, accreditation provides assurance that materials have been rigorously tested to national standards, which is critical for safety and compliance on significant projects. For its team, it fosters continuous improvement. And for the industry, it contributes to the delivery of infrastructure that is reliable, durable, and fit for purpose.

More Than Just Accreditation

For Boral, accreditation is far more than a compliance requirement. Over the 60 years that its Orange Grove laboratory has been accreditation, the company has fostered it into a mark of quality that builds long-term trust.

While the process requires discipline and investment, Boral believes the outcome is an embedded culture of technical rigour and assurance that strengthens customer confidence. For any laboratory that is considering starting its own accreditation journey, the advice from Orange Grove based on its own six-decade long experience is to embrace it as a pathway to both credibility and industry leadership.
