Accredited for Accuracy: Inside Avnet’s Water Meter Calibration Lab
NATA team

Avnet’s Water Meter Calibration Laboratory, has recently been accredited to the calibration standard ISO/IEC 17025.

Avnet pursued NATA accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for water meter calibration as part of its commitment to delivering technically robust, traceable, and defensible calibration services that meet the expectations of utilities, regulators, and industry stakeholders.

Established in 2025, the laboratory supports the calibration and verification of water meters, including ultrasonic meters used in large‑scale smart metering programs across Australia. These advanced technologies demand a high level of measurement confidence, reinforcing the importance of accredited calibration capability to ensure long‑term data integrity.

As water utilities adopt a broader range of meter technologies and operating profiles, the laboratory has been designed with flexibility to support evolving verification requirements across different meter types, sizes, and performance classes, with accreditation playing a key role in ensuring result integrity.

Responding to Industry Demand

The decision to pursue NATA accreditation was made when the laboratory was founded, driven by strong utility and customer expectations and increasing demand for accredited calibration services. As regulatory scrutiny and reliance on accurate consumption data grow, customers require assurance that calibration results are technically valid, traceable, and internationally recognised.

Achieving ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through NATA provides Avnet independent confirmation of the laboratory’s technical competence and quality systems. Calibration results are aligned with Australian and international standards and recognised under the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC‑MRA).

For Avnet, accreditation is fundamental to building confidence and trust with utilities and customers who rely on accurate water measurement for billing, compliance, and asset management. This milestone reinforces Avnet’s role as a trusted technical partner in the utility infrastructure sector.

NATA accreditation now enables the laboratory to deliver results traceable to national measurement standards, supporting data integrity and defensibility. ILAC‑MRA recognition also allows Avnet to provide accredited calibration services to other Avnet regions internationally, strengthening global consistency.

Internally, accreditation has improved process control, documentation, staff capability, and quality culture, positioning the laboratory to support the evolving needs of the water sector

A Journey Worth Taking

Avnet encourages organisations considering NATA accreditation to view it as a strategic investment in quality. Early preparation, strong documentation, and whole‑team engagement are critical to success, helping ensure improvements are sustained long‑term.

NATA congratulates Avnet on this achievement and looks forward to its ongoing contributions to the water meter sector.
