Ampol, Australia’s largest transport energy distributor and retailer, recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 60 years of NATA accreditation for its on-site laboratory, one of only two such facilities at a fuel company in the country.
Located at Ampol’s Lytton Refinery, the laboratory opened in 1965 and secured NATA accreditation within just six months, setting the standard for decades of precision testing. It plays a critical role in refinery operations, ensuring that every stream, blend stock, intermediate product, and final fuel meets stringent specifications including those required for aviation fuels and other regulated markets.
By conducting testing in-house, Ampol gains faster turnaround times, tighter operational integration, and greater control over quality assurance. The lab’s proximity to production allows for real-time decision-making, supporting operational safety, environmental stewardship, and the uninterrupted supply of fuel across Australia.
The laboratory’s work goes beyond safeguarding product integrity, it is central to maintaining refinery efficiency, protecting infrastructure, and meeting the high standards expected by regulators, industry partners, and customers alike. While most testing is focused on Ampol’s fuels, the laboratory also provides external certified testing services, covering incoming crude, finished products, and customer samples.
Through decades of consistent NATA-accredited testing, Ampol has been able to prevent contamination, guarantee product quality, and uphold trust in every fuel delivered to the market. They note that this accreditation is more than a technical credential, it is a cornerstone of Ampol’s commitment to safety, reliability, and excellence in fuel production.
For 60 years, the Lytton laboratory has exemplified what it means to combine technical expertise with operational excellence, delivering the fuels that keep Australia moving.
