Strengthening Trust: Australia’s Technical Infrastructure Alliance (ATIA) and Why you Need to Know Who They Are

Behind Australia’s safe products, reliable measurements and trusted services lies a powerful but often unseen system: the nation’s technical infrastructure. It is the foundation that supports commerce, innovation, public safety and international trade quietly working in the background to ensure confidence in everything from everyday purchases to complex industrial systems.

At the heart of this ecosystem is the Australian Technical Infrastructure Alliance (ATIA). ATIA provides a single, coordinated point of access to the combined capability, expertise and resources of the four core bodies responsible for Australia’s Standards and Conformance framework:

  • Standards Australia (SA)
  • National Measurement Institute (NMI)
  • National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)
  • Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JASANZ)

Together, these organisations have committed to a high level of collaboration working collectively for the benefit of government, industry and the broader community, both within Australia and internationally. This alignment ensures Australia’s technical infrastructure remains robust, trusted and globally connected.

Australia’s technical infrastructure encompasses the systems, organisations and resources that underpin metrology, standards, accreditation and conformity assessment. While largely invisible, their impact is felt everywhere. They provide the basis for confidence in trade and regulation, support productivity and economic growth, and enable the adoption of new and emerging technologies.

Everyday activities rely on this framework more than most people realise. Confidence that a kilogram of meat or a litre of petrol is accurately measured. Trust in the results of a blood test. Assurance that a car’s seatbelt performs as intended. Certainty that the food we eat is safe. None of these are possible without a strong, effective technical infrastructure operating behind the scenes.

On a larger scale, Australia’s participation in international trade depends on the global recognition of its standards, measurements and accreditation systems. Without this trusted foundation, commercial transactions both domestic and international would be slower, riskier and far less efficient.

Through ATIA, Australia brings these critical functions together under a shared vision: to strengthen trust, enable innovation and ensure confidence across the economy and society. It is a partnership designed not just to support today’s needs, but to prepare Australia for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
