Fotometrix has operated as a specialist calibration laboratory since the early 1980s, providing calibration services for aerosol photometers and airborne particle counters. Its activities support industries where measurement accuracy and traceability are required for regulatory, safety and quality purposes.
In November 1987, Fotometrix became the first laboratory in Australia to be accredited by NATA for the calibration of aerosol photometers and airborne particle counters. This marked the start of continuous accreditation in this field, which has been maintained without interruption.
In August 2016, Fotometrix was the first Australian laboratory to achieve ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the calibration of aerosol photometers and airborne particle counters. This accreditation confirmed compliance with internationally recognised requirements for technical competence, quality systems and measurement traceability.
In August 2021, Fotometrix designed and developed GraviCal, an inhouse multipoint gravimetric calibration system for aerosol photometers. The system was developed to meet the requirements of AS 1807 and ISO 14644 and operates in conformance with ISO/IEC 17025. GraviCal enables gravimetric calibration using representative aerosol sample as produced in the field with SI traceability.
Infrastructure capability expanded in July 2024 with the relocation to a purposebuilt facility dedicated to aerosol photometer and airborne particle counter calibration and repairs. The facility was designed to support these specific activities, including environmental control and equipment layout appropriate to calibration and repair work by factory trained technicians.
In December 2024, Fotometrix became the first and currently the only ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration laboratory worldwide to provide full multipoint gravimetric SItraceable calibration for aerosol photometers using a representative sample. Calibration reports include As Found and As Left results, records of adjustments performed, and gravimetric correction data presented across the required concentration range.
In addition to calibration services, Fotometrix operates the only aerosol photometer and airborne particle counter research and development laboratory in Australasia and is the only regional manufacturer of aerosol photometers and aerosol generators. The organisation provides calibration and repair services to major pharmaceutical manufacturers.
In November 2027, Fotometrix will mark 40 years of continuous, uninterrupted NATA accreditation.
