On March 14, NATA recognises World Sleep Day, highlighting the essential role of quality sleep in overall health and well-being.
13-years of caring for our sleep
Since 2012, NATA has been at the forefront of supporting sleep services through our Sleep Disorders Services (SDS) accreditation program, developed in collaboration with the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA).
Since the program’s inception, over 50 organisations across more than 90 sites have achieved accreditation, showcasing their dedication to excellence. This widespread adoption of accreditation has helped raise the overall standard of sleep health services in Australia, contributing to better outcomes for individuals experiencing sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome.
Accreditation through NATA allows sleep service providers to demonstrate technical competence, effective risk management, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
What’s covered in a sleep assessment?
Sleep facilities are assessed against the ASA Standard for Sleep Disorders Services. This standard is based on the internationally recognised ISO 15189 framework which has been tailored to cover the unique aspects of sleep services.
Providers are assessed against detailed criteria that cover every aspect of service delivery — from the suitability of the test requested, to the accuracy of diagnostic testing and the appropriateness of treatment pathways available. This process not only enhances patient care but also strengthens public trust in the services offered, reassuring patients and healthcare professionals alike that accredited services adhere to best practice guidelines.
Peer assessment – the X-Factor
Peer assessment is the cornerstone of NATA’s accreditation processes, with volunteer physicians and scientists – knowns as Technical Assessors – contributing their expertise to ensure the highest standards are upheld. They bring valuable real-world insights and clinical experience, helping to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within accredited facilities.
As we observe World Sleep Day, NATA continues to celebrate the ongoing contributions of accredited providers to better sleep health for the Australian community.

We are also pleased to share our ‘Sleep Matters’ video campaign, which highlights the vital role of accreditation in delivering trusted and reliable sleep health services. The video underscores how accurate, high-quality testing is essential for proper diagnosis, effective treatment, and improved health outcomes.
Without high-quality testing, the risk of misdiagnosis or incorrect treatment increases, potentially impacting patients’ well-being and long-term health. Accreditation ensures that every test result can be relied upon, giving patients and healthcare providers the confidence they need to make informed decisions about suitable care.
