Legacy to Leadership: 30 Years of Precision, Progress, and Patient Confidence
NATA team

Capital Pathology, a provider of pathology services across the ACT, Snowy Mountains, and southeast New South Wales, and a member of the Sonic Healthcare group, is celebrating 30 years of NATA accreditation, a milestone that underscores its enduring commitment to accuracy, innovation, and patient care.

Accreditation under the Capital Pathology name began in 1995, following the merger of two respected local laboratories; Drs Barratt and Smith Pathology and Moran Pathology. Since then, Capital Pathology’s scope of accreditation has expanded dramatically to cover its full suite of laboratory operations, from sample collection and testing to reporting and interpretation of results.

Evolving with precision and purpose

Over the past three decades, the pathology landscape has been transformed by new technologies, stricter regulations, and evolving healthcare needs. Through every change, Capital Pathology has continued to adopt and lead refining its systems, investing in innovation, and strengthening processes that ensure every result meets the highest international and national standards.

Today, its daily operations span blood bank and transfusion services, bone marrow and fine needle aspirations, histopathology, cytology, haematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology. Ongoing NATA assessments confirm that Capital Pathology not only meets, but often exceeds the standards required to provide doctors and patients with complete confidence in the quality and reliability of its results.

While accreditation under the Capital Pathology name dates to 1995, its roots in excellence stretch back even further. Both Drs Barratt & Smith Pathology and Moran Pathology maintained NATA accreditation for roughly two decades before their merger, establishing a foundation of trust and technical integrity that continues to define Capital Pathology today.

For the team, 30 years of continuous accreditation represents far more than compliance — it’s a reflection of the organisation’s enduring values: precision, professionalism, and patient-first care.

As it looks to the future, Capital Pathology remains steadfast in its mission to provide results that clinicians and patients can trust — continuing a proud tradition of accredited excellence that has supported the community for generations.

Capital Pathology: 30 Years of Pathology Excellence

Capital Pathology, a private pathology service provider in the ACT, Snowy Mountains, and southeast NSW regions and member of the Sonic Healthcare group, has achieved 30 years of accreditation by NATA.

Capital Pathology was accredited in 1995, continuing the 20+ years of recognition of the accredited pathology services formally provided by Drs Barratt & Smith Pathology and Moran Pathology, which merged that year to become Capital Pathology. The accreditation has carried over to its current range of comprehensive pathology services, encompassing all laboratory processes including sample collection, testing, and reporting of results.

Current daily operations include blood bank and transfusion services, bone marrow and fine needle aspirations, histopathology, cytology, haematology, clinical chemistry and microbiology. Accreditation for these services demonstrates Capital Pathology’s adherence to international and national standards, which then provides doctors and patients with confidence that results are of the highest quality.

Continually evolving

Over the decades, the pathology industry has evolved in the technological and regulatory environment. This has required Capital Pathology to continually improve and adapt to this evolving landscape.

Regular assessments by NATA have verified that Capital Pathology is keeping pace with change and provides its patients and doctors with an ever-increasing level of care and quality. In doing so, it continues the recognition of its predecessors’ excellent reputation of servicing the community.

Capital Pathology is proud of its 30-year NATA endorsement and recommends accreditation to any organisation wishing to provide a trusted service.
