A new standard from Standards Australia has enabled seaweed to be a sustainable feed additive for livestock.
A first-of-its-kind standard, AS 5404 – Bromoform Feed Quality, has been published to enable scaled manufacturing of natural bromoform, a saltwater-based ruminants superfood.
With approximately 10% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions caused by livestock, Standards Australia hopes that this standard for the bromoform compound, derived from the Asparagopsis seaweed in a standardised framework, is another contribution towards achieving Net Zero goals.
“Through a series of fast-tracked decisions made in collaboration with industry experts, this standard is a significant step towards a more sustainable and secure future for our food supply chain,” said Standards Australia Chief Operating Officer, Kareen Riley-Takos.
More than a seaweed
The new standard is designed to help ensure feed safety by setting sustainable bromoform levels in animal feed. It also establishes standard testing methods for using the compound to maintain food supply chain integrity and prevent fraud.
Global alignment is ensure by aligning bromoform feed processes with other feed standards, supporting food security, climate change, and sustainability initiatives.
Standards Australia expects the sustainable seaweed initiative to be a significant step towards a more sustainable and secure food supply chain.
“We are proud to support the growing agricultural seaweed industry,” said Riley-Takos.
