The Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry is adapting to rapid digital change and evolving industry needs. As new technologies emerge, the way trust and confidence are delivered through conformity assessment must also evolve.
TIC Council members are adopting more agile, digitally supported approaches that improve efficiency, scalability and reliability, while continuing to support confidence in products and services.
Innovation, however, does not replace core principles. Independence, impartiality, technical competence and confidentiality remain essential to credible conformity assessment.
A key concept is humanintheloop (HITL), which ensures that qualified people remain involved in important decisions, even when digital or automated systems are used. HITL requires human approval, input or supervision at defined decision points.
HITL has two parts: human oversight and human accountability. Oversight involves professionals monitoring and validating digital systems. Accountability ensures responsibility for decisions and outcomes is clearly assigned and legally compliant.
Together, these principles support the responsible use of new technologies while maintaining trust in conformity assessment outcomes.
