The thermal protective performance of textile garments can now be evaluated at RMIT’s newly accredited FLAMME laboratory. Located at the Brunswick campus in Melbourne, within the School of Fashion and Textiles, FLAMME is the only facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
The laboratory conducts two standardised test methods – ISO 13506 and ASTM F1930—both of which utilise an instrumented manikin (Burnie, Thermetrics™) to quantify the thermal energy transmitted through garments during exposure to simulated flash-fire.
FLAMME supports NATA accredited commercial testing and applied research, leveraging equipment and multidisciplinary expertise from across the University. Local testing offers advantages including streamlined logistics, the opportunity to observe the testing process, and the ability to inspect garment damage post-burn.
The decision to pursue formal NATA accreditation was driven by client demand for internationally recognised accredited testing and the importance of reliable results for safety products used in sectors such as firefighting, aviation, defense, mining, aerospace, and motorsports.
