Over summer Standards Australia has focused on improving community awareness of safety by sparking conversations about a range of relevant issues related to Australia’s holiday season. Read more below. 

Holiday gifts and product safety

As cost-of-living pressures bite, recent research showed Aussies tightened their Christmas budgets. Standards Australia spoke publicly about the importance of consumers knowing what to consider and what to look for when purchasing over the holiday season. In the search for savings, many people are trending toward cheaper gift options, such as those from more inexpensive brands or from overseas. Pool safety 

Royal Life Saving Australia threw new support behind an updated swimming pool standard during the summer school holidays period.  Updated standards, they say, assist in raising awareness and improving approaches to drowning prevention in backyard pools. “Child drowning in backyard swimming pools often results from a lapse in supervision, meaning the pool fence and gate is critical. The updated standard assists in raising awareness and improving approaches to drowning prevention in backyard pools.” 

The revised guidelines enhance the design, construction, and testing of safety barriers.

Worker and heat safety 

Heat-related risks for outdoor workers, including illnesses, UV exposure, equipment failures, heighten over summer and the best ways to avoid and manage these risks is adherence to safety standards and by staying informed about managing heat hazards for outdoor worker.

BBQ safety 

Whether you’re grilling snags, hosting a pool party, or setting up festive lights, being prepared and aware of potential risks can keep your summer safe and enjoyable. The backyard barbecue is a quintessential summer activity but can cause fires, injuries, and property damage if not correctly maintained or used. Maintain clean barbecues and ensure gas hoses and connections are secure and leak-free, as outlined by Standards Australia.
