The term Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is known by many professionals, but confusion and misinformation can obscure its true meaning and value. From beliefs that CPD is only for regulated professions to the perception that online learning does not count, this has led to myths that discourage professionals from actively investing and engaging in continuous learning and development.

Here are some of the more common myths associated with continuing professional development and the realities behind it.

Myth: CPD is only for certain professions, such as teaching and medical

Reality: Some fields, such as healthcare and education, have often emphasised career development to the point that it may have a formalised process. However, every profession can benefit from continuous learning and development.

Myth: CPD Is only required if you are told to do it

Reality: Some fields may have a prerequisite study path while others require that CPD points are accrued annually. However, it is the individual who is responsible for their personal and professional success by staying up to date with the latest trends, technologies, and skills.

Myth: CPD is just about career advancement

Reality: Learning new ways to adapt to industry changes and improve job performance can lead to promotions and salary increases. However, the benefits of CPD extend into other areas beyond career progression, such as personal growth, improved confidence, and networking opportunities.

Myth: CPD is only for junior staff and will not make a difference for anyone else

Reality: Lifelong learning is not limited to those in entry-level positions. Continuous professional development is vital at any stage in a person’s career, which means that even senior professionals and team leaders can benefit from refining their strategic skills.

Myth: Certification is the only goal of CPD

Reality: While obtaining a certificate can be a substantial outcome of learning, the true value comes from applying what has been learned. Unless the new insights and skills are practically applied to a career, a certification will remain just as a certificate.

Myth: Only formal training counts as CPD

Reality: Formal training is a popular way to continuously learn, develop, and excel, but it is possible to get CPD from attending an event, watching a webinar, or even reading a book. For example, attending both days of our Accreditation Matters conference provides 18 CPD credits based on the variety and depth of content available.

Shape your professional development

By recognising CPD as a multifaceted and accessible tool that can enhance both personal and professional growth, it can provide a meaningful learning path that goes beyond formal training. This then enables an individual to take charge of their professional development and better navigate their career path.
