For those involved in inspection activities, you will be aware that ISO/IEC 17020 conformity assessment – requirements for the operation of various types of inspection bodies, was published in 2012.

In 2022, a CASCO ballot sought feedback on the need to review the Standard. Given the necessity to align with updated 17000 series Standards like ISO/IEC 17025 and address implementation inquiries, a revision was deemed essential to keep the Standard relevant, current, and in line with best practices and emerging technologies.

Since this time, the entire Standard has been thoroughly reviewed, clarified, and updated, with key focus areas including:

  • Integration of ILAC P15 principles where applicable.
  • Inclusion of all clarifications sought from CASCO through various communication channels.
  • A detailed assessment of the impartiality and independence section.
  • A careful alignment with the most recent and reviewed standards to ensure consistency.

In addition to the changes arising from the focus areas mentioned above, other key changes include revised terms and definitions, a simplified independence section with two types (Type A and non-Type A) instead of the previous three, now relocated under Section 5.

Additionally, updates were made to the sections on facilities and equipment, externally provided products and services, inspection processes, and the management system to ensure alignment with the latest ISO 17000 series standards.
